IABC/Toronto selects Alan Middleton as its 2014 Communicator of the Year

Transparent communications is a priority for this year’s IABC/Toronto Communicator of the Year – Dr. Alan Middleton, executive director, Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) and assistant professor of marketing, Schulich School of Business at York University. Dr. Middleton has leveraged his visionary approach to communications and marketing to turn SEEC into a world-class executive education facility.

A marketing industry veteran Dr. Middleton has 25 years working as a practitioner in marketing and marketing communications and 23 years as an academic in the field.  Dr. Middleton is the co-author of two books: Advertising Works II and Ikonica – A Fieldguide to Canada’s Brandscape, a co-founder of the Cassie advertising awards and in 2005, he was inducted into the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends.

For the past 18 years, IABC/Toronto has presented the Communicator of the Year award to a GTA-based communicator who demonstrates exceptional leadership, management and communications skills.

IABC/Toronto Communicator of the Year Criteria:

  1. Demonstrates exceptional leadership, management and communications skills
  • Has a well-defined defined vision, objectives, expectations and strategic priorities in conjunction with leadership of the organization
  • Values the communications function and includes key communicators in the development of the organization’s strategic plan in order to demonstrate a commitment to engaging key stakeholders
  • Embraces a leading role in the delivery of the communications program to entrench a position as the definitive leader of the organization and all that it represents
  • Encourages a defined process to measure the impact and effectiveness of the organization’s communications programs
  1. Develops communication strategies that contribute to the ongoing success of the organization
  • Has encouraged and endorsed the development of a strategic communication plan identifying core values, key messages, delivery channels, key milestones and success metrics
  1. Uses effective internal and external communications
  • Has endorsed a formal and informal detailed strategic plan to communicate the vision, objectives and priorities of the organization to all internal and external stakeholders in both traditional and non-traditional formats
  • Views communications as a tool to help stakeholders understand challenges and successes of the organization
  • Encourages and participates in new and emerging forms of communications
  1. Communicates to diverse audiences
  • Takes an active role in multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder communications demonstrating openness and encouraging support for the achievement of the organization’s objectives
  • Encourage programs to measure the impact of these efforts and adapt accordingly to achieve the desired communications results
  1. Exemplifies the role of leader in communications
  • Has a demonstrated track record and commitment to both corporate and community citizenship

 

Eligibility:

  • The nominee’s organization must be based in the Greater Toronto area. See map for area clarification
  • The nominee must have at least one year tenure in their current position as of November 1, 2014
  • The nominee must have the official title of Chairman, CEO, COO, President or equivalent paid position in a charity, association, private or public sector

 

Nomination information:

The call for nominations is designed to create dialogue in the Greater Toronto Area communications community. Members and non-members may submit a nomination. Nominations do not have to be for a leader within your own organization – nomination of communications excellence wherever it might be is encouraged.

Submissions will be reviewed by a four-person judging panel comprising of past presidents and board members of IABC/Toronto. Nominations will be kept confidential and not made public at any time; however, a member of the judging panel may follow up with you to ask additional questions about your nomination. Recipients will be invited to speak at a special breakfast event on Tuesday, March 102015 where they will be presented with their award.

 

Key Dates:

Nomination deadline: Monday, November 17, 2014
Review of applications, judging and follow-up (if required): November 17 to December 12, 2014
Notification to winner and all applicants: December 15 to 19, 2014
Coordination with nominator of winner to obtain bio, photos, etc.: Late December/Early January
News release announcing recipient and social media promotion: Mid-January to Late-February
IABC/Toronto Communicator of the Year breakfast event: Tuesday, March 10, 2015
